<p>Yavuz Sultan Selim turned the direction to the east in his short reign. 1514 He defeated the Safavids in Çaldıran, 1516-17 Mercidabık and Mamluks in Ridaniye. Egypt, Syria and Hejaz were connected to the Ottoman Empire; the caliphate and holy relics came to Istanbul. The spice road and Eastern Mediterranean trade flowed into the state. His fierce temperament and quick expeditions became legendary. Yavuz made the Ottoman Empire the central power of the Islamic world.He left his son Kanuni a universal empire.</p>
